Road Testing My New Musical Style at Open Mic Night in Cook ACT Australia

Last night, I played a 30-minute set at the open mic night at To All My Friends — a brilliant little bar tucked into the Cook Shops here in Canberra. This outdoor gig had that relaxed, communal vibe where people genuinely come to listen — the kind of setting where songs land differently and you can take musical risks.

Right now, I’m in the thick of evolving my performance. These open mic nights are more than just a chance to play — they’re a testing ground. A space to road-test the new musical me. To prove, to myself and to others, that I’ve got what it takes to be a regular gigging performer.
I’m working closely with Finbar Horgan, an Edinburgh-based guitarist, mentor, and all-round musical craftsman. Finbar has decades of experience helping artists refine their sound — not just in terms of technique, but in shaping songs that truly suit your voice and playing style. He’s been guiding me through a complete refresh of my cover setlist, helping me craft versions that feel personal and stage-ready.
Together, we’ve been curating a strong set of popular covers — songs that connect, challenge me as a performer, and hold up in the real world of pub gigs.

Setlist I Took for a Spin
• Stuck In The Middle With You – Stealers Wheel
• Come Together – The Beatles
• Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
• Cracklin’ Rosie – Neil Diamond
• With or Without You – U2
• Shotgun – George Ezra
• Here Comes the Sun – The Beatles
Each of these songs is part of my evolving voice as a solo performer. From the stripped-back groove of Come Together to the nostalgia-laced warmth of Cracklin’ Rosie, my aim was to find out what landed — and how I could shape each track into something uniquely mine.

The Highlight?
Without a doubt: Here Comes the Sun.
It was my closer, and a song I wouldn’t have dared attempt just a few weeks ago. But not anymore. This time, it brought the energy up right when it needed it — people clapping, heads nodding, smiles all round.
That’s what it’s about.

Why These Nights Matter
At this stage in my journey, open mic gigs like this are essential. They give me the space to explore. To refine. To listen, to learn, and to shape a show that feels authentic — whether I’m playing a quiet pub, a bustling market, or delivering one of my Music and Memories performances for aged care and community audiences.

About the Venue
To All My Friends is one of Canberra’s best-kept secrets — a bar with great food, local brews, and a real neighbourhood feel. It’s got heart, and a genuine commitment to live music. Their open mic night draws a rich mix of performers and listeners, and it’s always a pleasure to be part of that scene.

Looking Ahead
This blog is where I’ll keep sharing moments from the road — from behind the mic to behind the scenes. If you’re a fellow musician, or just someone who loves live music in local spaces, I hope you’ll follow along.
Big thanks to To All My Friends for the stage, the sound, and the support.
And to Finbar — 17,000km away in Edinburgh — for pushing me to be better with every song.
